Temporary Dry Eye Following LASIK
Dry eye syndrome is a common condition in the general population. The frequency of dry eye increases with age and is more common in
women, with the use of certain medications (see list below), in low humidity conditions, and with prolonged near work such as with
reading or computer use. After Lasik, the eye can experience increased dryness for a period of time. The dryness does not impact
the outcome of Lasik surgery but can cause typical dry eye symptoms such as eye redness, irritation and blurring of the vision. These
symptoms tend to gradually abate over several months but it some it can take longer.
In order to minimize the effects of dry eye we recommend to all of our Lasik patients that they use artificial tears frequently
(minimum four times a day), especially with computer use. In addition, the oral intake of omega 3 fatty acids (flaxseed and fish oils)
can help the quality of the tear film and mitigate against dry eye symptoms. Omega 3’s are also recommended for good general
health maintenance. Restasis is a topical eye medication for dry eyes and the only medication available for this condition.
We recommend the use of Restasis for our
many of our Lasik patients. In selected patients who the dry is more bothersome, we advise the
use of punctual plugs (small silicone plugs that are placed in the opening of the tear ducts thereby keeping more of one’s
natural tears on the eye surface longer). Other topical treatments may also be considered temporarily until the symptoms or dry
eye condition resolves. For those patients who have pre-existing dry eye, continuation of treatment may be helpful.
