Experience

Dr. Gullingsrud is a Board-Certified, National Leader in Cataract and LASIK surgery, specializing in lifestyle lens implants for cataract surgery and iLASIK (LASIK surgery with Intralase). He also performs Botox injections and eyelid surgery for Edina Eye.

After completing a Hall of Fame career at Fargo South High School, Dr. Gullingsrud attended Stanford University on a National Merit Scholarship. He graduated from both Stanford and the University of Minnesota Medical School with Honors. He attended Dartmouth for his Medicine Internship, then returned to Minnesota to complete his Ophthalmology Residency.

Dr. Gullingsrud is an accomplished teacher. His current academic title is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. He regularly teaches medical students and ophthalmology residents from the UM and Mayo Clinic. He has instructed hundreds of doctors across the United States and around the World in basic and advanced Eye Surgery techniques. He has taught courses at Harvard, Stanford and the University of Minnesota Medical Schools. His teaching videos are featured on YouTube. He is an invited speaker for surgery courses locally, nationally and internationally. He has hosted and mentored student doctors and ophthalmologists from the USA and foreign countries. Patient education is central to his practice philosophy.

Dr. Gullingsrud has a passion for volunteerism. He regularly participates in free medical eye clinics in Minneapolis and has been a part of Minnesota Special Olympics since 1991. He has also done charity mission work in local Homeless Shelters, for American Veterans and in several international locations, including Vietnam, India and Tonga. He created and continues to contribute a monthly ‘volunteer profile’ column for his state medical society newsletter.

Dr. Gullingsrud began his medical career as a General Practitioner in Hawaii and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation, which provides student scholarships and free medical care for disadvantaged people in the South Pacific. He has practiced medicine in Minnesota since 1995. He completed his Ophthalmology Board certification in 2000 and recertification in 2010.

He has been recognized by his peers in Medicine, who voted him a state “Top Doc” and national “Super Doctor” on numerous occasions, and by his peers in Ophthalmology, who elected him Chairman at Fairview Southdale Hospital, to state leadership roles in the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and to national leadership roles in the American Academy of Ophthalmology. During his chairmanship at Southdale, he founded the current Eye Care Center, one of the busiest specialty surgery centers in the state. He is also an appointed Congressional Advisor on health care reform.

Dr. Gullingsrud has developed a reputation for combining sophisticated surgical and medical skills with a patient-friendly approach. His efforts have produced a number of honors: the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Achievement and Distinguished Service Awards, the Sight and Hearing Association’s Prevention of Blindness Award, and the Consumer’s Research Council of America “Top Ophthalmologist” Award.

He accepts new patients at all his clinic locations for surgical evaluations and routine eye care, including optical prescription updates, diabetic screening exams, glaucoma treatment and macular degeneration evaluations.

He operates at several locations, including Fairview Southdale and Ridges HospitalsMinnesota Valley Surgery Center, St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Mayo Clinic New Prague, Laser Vision Center of Edina and Phillips Eye Institute.
